Build Your Sea Miles

Whether you need to skipper some serious passages before taking a Yachtmaster exam, want to build your sea miles in a safe and enjoyable environment, or simply want to try out offshore cruising as an active crew member, an Urban Truant cruise is a great experience.

We run voyages to France, the Channel Islands and the West Country, combining real passages and interesting pilotage with visits to pretty harbours along the way.

Your first cross-Channel voyage can be a big hurdle to face and our talented instructors — all RYA Yachtmaster examiners and instructors — will show you how to make it a safe and enjoyable experience.

Channel Islands

Pilotage through the Channel Islands is challenging and extremely satisfying, with stunning coastal scenery en route. It provides a great introduction for less experienced crew members and a chance to hone skills for those building towards higher skippering qualifications.

West Country

The West Country has beautiful scenery and many glorious harbours with a slower pace of life than the often hectic Solent, so a cruise here is always fun.

Building Toward Yachtmaster

For those trying to amass the mileage and skippering hours required before attempting a Yachtmaster exam, these cruises are ideal. When booking, let us know your plans and we can ensure you are nominated to skipper at least one of the longer passages and some of the more complex pilotage too. The instructor will be on board but, barring necessity, will enable you to skipper the boat.

Prerequisites

Complete beginners to sailing would be advised to take a course such as RYA Competent Crew before joining a longer cruise, as you will find the whole experience much more enjoyable as an active member of the crew. However, only basic knowledge is required and many relative beginners have had a great time and learnt a huge amount on these trips.
