Own boat tuition is ideal for anyone who would like to learn more about their new boat, or consolidate knowledge of a boat they've owned for a while. No two sessions are the same. At Urban Truant we are responsive to your objectives and the itinerary will be shaped (and re-shaped) entirely to what you want to achieve.
Having one of Urban Truant's friendly and knowledgeable skippers on board is a reassuring safety net whilst you practice berthing, anchoring, hoisting and dropping sails, efficient tacking, safely gybing, and more.
Even just having someone on hand to help you go through the electronics or get answers to those niggly questions you have about your yacht will improve your knowledge and give you the confidence to use your boat more.

How It Works
Before Your Session
Tell us about your boat, your experience level, and what you'd like to achieve. We'll match you with a skipper who can help you reach your goals.
During Your Session
Your skipper joins you aboard your own yacht. The ratio is flexible and you can include your crew — everyone benefits from the session. The day is entirely shaped around your objectives, whether that's building berthing confidence, learning your electronics, or tackling that first longer passage.
Flexible Duration
Sessions can be arranged for a few hours, a full day, or multiple days depending on what you want to cover. We'll work around your schedule.
After the Session
You'll have greater confidence in handling your own yacht and the knowledge to make better use of her capabilities. Many boat owners return for refresher sessions before the start of each season.

Can you come to my marina?
Yes — own boat tuition takes place on your boat at your location. We will travel to you, whether that is a marina, mooring, or boatyard.
What will we cover?
The day is completely tailored to you. Common topics include boat handling, passage planning, anchoring, mooring, man overboard drills, and building confidence. Just tell us what you would like to work on.
Can I bring my partner or crew?
Absolutely — in fact it is encouraged. Training with your regular crew means everyone learns together and builds confidence on your own boat.
How many people can take part?
The session is bespoke so the number depends on your boat and your goals. Typically we work with 1 to 4 people.
Does this count towards any RYA qualification?
Own boat tuition does not lead to an RYA certificate, but the sea time and skills gained absolutely count towards your logbook hours for future qualifications.
