RYA Coastal / Yachtmaster™ Online Theory

RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster™ theory is an advanced course that builds on the knowledge gained at Day Skipper level. It is aimed at sailors and motor boaters who are looking to undertake more complex passages, perhaps offshore or at night.

This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical examinations.

Through carefully written modules, the online course guides you through advanced techniques in all areas of navigation. At the end of each module, you are invited to try out what you have learned with online tests. Full answers are immediately available for every test question and you can go back and re-do any part of the module.

Once you have completed the course you're ready to sit the exams from your own home or office. Your submitted answers will be marked by a qualified RYA shorebased instructor, and if successful you will be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster™ Theory Certificate.

How the Course Works

Online Learning

Work through the advanced modules at your own pace. Each section builds on Day Skipper knowledge with more complex scenarios and techniques.

Instructor Support

You'll be assigned a dedicated RYA Yachtmaster™ Instructor to answer your questions via email, phone, Skype or FaceTime.

The Exam

Complete the exam from home in a time limit. Answers are marked by a qualified instructor who will issue your certificate if successful.

After the Course

You'll have the background knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night. This certificate is the theory requirement for both the RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical examinations, and enables you to progress to the Coastal Skipper practical course or work towards your Yachtmaster™ Offshore qualification.
