During the course you will cover the calling of other vessels and stations ashore; essential for securing that overnight berth! The course also covers the use VHF radio sets that are equipped with Digital Select Calling (DSC), which is part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British vessel.
A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. Unnecessary transmissions could easily block out a Mayday distress call.
Course topics include:
- The basics of radio operation;
- The correct frequencies (channels) to be used;
- Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures;
- Making ship to shore calls;
- Digital Selective Calling (DSC);
- Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS);
- Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) &
- Search and Rescue (SART).
The course is taught using radio simulators and will be examined by a short written test.
